EVM group – the name isn’t that new among the automotive dealers in  India. It has become a brand itself with EVM motors that surprised everyone with its enviously rapid growth over the past 15 years.  It was in recognition of the same that Mr. Sabu Johny, Chairman and Managing Director of the group was awarded  “Successful Businessman of the year 2015 “  by SmartDrive ,  Kerala’s No. 1 automobile magazine on January 30, 2016.  The success saga of EVM group is a story of earnestness and utmost transparency in business deals.

The EVM group was founded by E.V.Mathai  , back in 1952 as a company with a turnover of just Rs. 10,000. Right from our humble beginning through the hard work of over six decades, EVM has dared to dream big and dominate various business sectors while keeping with their primacies to maintain a customer-focused, value-based business capable of rising up to new challenges. And now , with Mr. Sabu Johny as the CMD, the EVM group of companies has flourished and expanded to almost every zone of business including automobiles, resorts, rubber and multiplexes.   It was after post graduating in M.Com from Mar Athenicious college, kothamangalam that Sabu started his career as a businessman. While two of his other siblings  - Saju Johny and Sony Johny-are fully involved in movie halls and hospitality sectors ,  the third one Martin Johny is busy coordinating the group’s operations at kothamangalam.

It was under Sabu that the group ventured into  automotive dealerships and several other sectors. This accidental entry of Sabu into automotive sector  was resulted out of his marriage with Divya, the daughter of T. C. Paul,  the owner of Dee Dee Motors. It was period when automobile industry in India was witnessing  the first signs of growth and Sabu, a visionary by birth foresaw it much before. The franchaise of Honda Motor cycles and scooters were thus established in 2001. But Sabu’s entrepreneurial spirit never ceased with EVM Honda. He soon ventured into four wheeler market by owing a Maruti dealership in Kochi in 2006.  But EVM  forced to give up Maruti dealership later as  the company’s policies did not permit Maruti dealers to expand to other brands. “My father Johny taught me the basics of business. Father always encouraged me to do better in business and I thank him for making me a man with ethics and integrity in business,” says Sabu Johny.

It was in 2008 that Sabu opened his Volkswagen dealership in Kochi. Today, EVM VW has its branches spread across major cities in Kerala like Thiruvanthapuram,  Kottayam, Kollam, Cheranallur and Perumbavoor etc.  Sabu expanded his empire further in 2009 by opening a Nissan dealership . These days one can find an ‘EVM Nissan’ in cities like Kozhikode, Malapppuram, Perumbavur, Alappuzha, Kalamassery, etc. Other ventures include Ashok Leyland LCV outlets in Alappuzha, Kollam, Thiruvanthapuram. He also started the dealerships of Scania buses and American all terrain vehicle Polaris too.

EVM also boasts of being the only authorised dealers for the German auto giant Porsche in Kerala. A new 11,000 sq.ft showroom for the same is under construction at Edappally.  EVM has made glorious achievements in  sales too.  Over 110 Porsches have been sold within a short span of  24 months.  EVM has sold 17,000 VWs and 15,000 Nissan vehicles  and around two lakh Honda two wheelers.

Sabu , a former shotput and basketball champion, also is a member of district table tennis association. Being a sportsman at heart , Sabu approaches his business with the same spirit. Just as business firms consider customer as the king, Sabu considers his employees are responsible for the growth of his institution. “The greatest boon of EVM is its crew consisting of around 1500 employees including senior and experienced professionals. Without their support I would not have achieved this growth. Having a group of people who has been working with you a long time helps the growth of the company as, their personal growth is intertwined with the companies’ growth. Personally I have been lucky enough to retain all my key people from the last 15 years,” says a humbled Sabu.

Other than a tactful businessman, he is also a loving husband and a caring father of two.
